MINSK, 5 January (BelTA) – Belarus’ world number one Aryna Sabalenka came back to defeat Russia’s World No.107 Polina Kudermetova 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 to secure her Brisbane title, BelTA has learned.
En route to the final, the Belarusian notched wins over Mexico’s No.75 Renata Zarazua, 6-4, 6-0, Kazakhstan’s No.29 Yulia Putintseva, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4, No.44 Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic, 6-3, 6-4, and Russia’s No.16 Mirra Andreeva, 6-3, 6-2. Marie Bouzkova saw off Belarus’ world number 20 Victoria Azarenka, 6-4, 6-4, in the third round.
Brisbane became the 18th career title for 26-year-old Aryna Sabalenka.
The first Grand Slam tournament of the season, the Australian Open will kick off in a week and will take place in Melbourne on 12-26 January. Aryna Sabalenka won the two previous Australian Open editions. Victoria Azarenka won the event in 2012 and 2013.
