"On Point"
MINSK, 16 April (BelTA) – The United States pursued several objectives in its military actions against Iran, said Andrei Bogodel, Candidate of Military Sciences, Deputy Head of the Faculty of Education and Science, Head of the Education and Methodology Department of the Faculty of the General Staff of the Armed Forces at the Military Academy of Belarus, in a recent episode of BelTA’s project On Point.
“If we talk about what is happening in the Middle East, in the Persian Gulf countries, we are seeing only the tip of the iceberg. It is about the armed conflict between Iran on one side and Israel and the United States on the other,” Andrei Bogodel said. “But if we look more closely at what is happening in the Middle East, many interesting things emerge.”
An expert expressed the opinion that the U.S. military and political leadership could not have failed to anticipate a scenario in which Iran might block the Strait of Hormuz. Consequently, one should not rule out the possibility that Washington actually counted on such a blockade of this vital waterway. In this context, Andrei Bogodel suggested examining several objectives that the Americans may be pursuing in the Middle East.
“There are several strategic goals here. The USA pursued a military objective in Iran to provoke everything that is now unfolding in the Middle East. The second objective is economic. And oil is not the primary objective, though it does play an important role,” he emphasized. “The third objective is geopolitical. The so-called ‘Iranian balcony’ is linked to access to southern seas and oceans.” Thus, according to Andrei Bogodel, the geopolitical aim of the United States was to weaken Iran’s influence and establish full control over the region.
