Fourth day on Polish border for refugees: Nearly all kids have cold

MINSK, 11 November (BelTA) – Nearly all the kids in the camp have caught a cold, the nights are very cold, a 14-year-old refugee, who is stuck in the spontaneous camp near the Polish border together with his family, told BelTA.

A large group of migrants moving towards the Belarusian-Polish border was noticed not far from the border crossing Bruzgi in the morning on 8 November. Most of the migrants are Kurds from Iraq. The migrants have been unable to enter Poland so far. They set up a camp near the Polish border line. One of the refugees is a 14-year-old Ahmed, who is trying to enter the European Union together with his parents and three brothers. They came from the Iraqi city of Sulaymaniyah.

“We are going to Germany or the UK. We asked Poland to let us through. In response they used gas against me, my mother, and brothers – everyone was doused,” the refugee said. He complained about hard life in the camp, primarily cold weather.

“Nearly all the kids here have caught cold. Today I slept in a tent while my brother slept on the bare ground,” the young man said. By the way, different estimates put the number of refugees in the camp at over 3,000 people. The number includes about 500 kids, some of them are babies. They lack a lot, including milk.

“We are grateful to Belarusians. They have brought water and are sharing food. But dealing with cold is very difficult,” the refugee said.

The fourth day in the camp proceeds calmly. Makeshift huts and even improvised houses are being built next to the tents. The refugees are unwilling to stay in Belarus or go back to their home country. They hope to enter the European Union.
