Call to safeguard memory of heroism of Belarusian people

MINSK, 6 May (BelTA) - Courage and heroism of the Belarusian people should never be forgotten, Chairman of the Belarusian State Committee on Science and Technology Aleksandr Shumilin told BelTA.

“The Day of the Great Victory – 9 May – is a significant event in history. Belarus paid too high a price in 1941-1945, and we have no right to forget about the horrors of war as well as about courage, heroism and feat of our people in the fight against the Nazis. We bow to the veterans who sacrificed their lives and health for the victory, so that our country should be strong and independent, so that we should live happily,” Aleksandr Shumilin said.

In his words, the war affected almost every family in Belarus. “My grandfathers fought at the front line and my grandmother, still very young, was a communication agent for partisans,” Aleksandr Shumilin shared his family story.

“Belarus Remembers. We Remember Everyone” nationwide campaign is underway in Belarus to mark the 75th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War. Representatives of the National Science and Technology Committee and the National Center for Intellectual Property joined the event and laid flowers at the Grieving Mother monument in the Chelyuskintsev Park. “Soviet prisoners of war, partisans and civilians - over 10,000 people - are buried here, in a mass grave. They were shot by the Nazi invaders during the Great Patriotic War. We pay tribute to their memory today,” said Aleksandr Shumilin.
