MINSK, 9 May (BelTA) – Before a parade in honor of the 80th anniversary of the Soviet nation’s Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 began in Minsk, Belarusian Defense Minister Viktor Khrenin talked to a BelTA reporter about the personal meaning Victory Day has for him.

Viktor Khrenin said: “Victory Day is a very important celebration for me as the defense minister and as a citizen. And certainly, as a grandson of two veterans of the Great Patriotic War. Regretfully, they are no longer alive but they have told me a lot [about the war]. This holiday has always been a family celebration for us and will remain so.”

The defense minister pointed out that this holiday is personal for many Belarusians as well. “I don’t think there is a single family in Belarus unaffected by the war. Not a single family that doesn’t know how we secured this Victory. If our grandfathers and great grandfathers had not prevailed, we would not live. This is why it is a celebration we all share,” the official added.
