Belarus-Armenia cooperation in international organizations discussed

MINSK, 12 December (BelTA) – Belarusian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrei Dapkiunas met with Ambassador of Armenia Armen Ghevondyan on 12 December. The sides discussed the current state and ways to further advance interaction of the two countries in international organizations, BelTA has learned.

Andrei Dapkiunas and Armen Ghevondyan noted the high level of mutual support and concord in Belarus' and Armenia's intentions with regard to a number of important topics on the international agenda. The main avenues of cooperation mentioned during the meeting included joint actions to improve the coordination of efforts of the international community to fight trafficking in persons and work at the international level to implement the Sustainable Development Agenda and enable effective interactions between national SDG coordinators.

The two diplomats also mentioned tight interaction in the UN within the framework of the like-minded group of supporters of middle-income countries, including in the context of a recent high-level meeting of the UN General Assembly on 4 December 2018. The importance of working out strategic approaches to partnership with international organizations with middle-income countries was mentioned.

Speaking about Belarusian-Armenian cooperation in peaceful uses of nuclear energy, Andrei Dapkiunas thanked Armenia for sharing the valuable experience of stress testing nuclear power plants using European Union methods. He was also grateful for fruitful cooperation of Belarusian and Armenian delegations due to the implementation of the UNECE Convention on Environmental Impact Assessment in a Transboundary Context (Espoo Convention).
