Golovchenko sees National Bank as full-fledged and independent player in Belarus’ fiscal system

MINSK, 17 April (BelTA) - Chairman of the Board of the National Bank Roman Golovchenko shared his vision of the role of the central bank in the country’s economic life as he gave an interview to the First News Channel, BelTA learned.

According to Roman Golovchenko, the president's message that the National Bank needs to take a more active part in the economic development of the country is very timely and relevant. “After all, the banking system provides the economy with the resources necessary for its development. But here I would emphasize the role of the National Bank as the country’s central bank in the economic policy, the monetarypolicy and credit supply. Because the economy largely depends on how effectively we manage this most important resource,” he said.

The National Bank should be a full-fledged and independent player in the economic life of the country that, in cooperation with the Council of Ministers and other government agencies, implements economic policy within its purview, the head of the National Bank is confident. “We should not pursue overly conservative approaches but at the same time we should act decisively and fully utilize the powers that have been vested with the National Bank,” Roman Golovchenko said and added that this also corresponds very well with the tasks set out in Directive No. 11.

“We have a clear understanding of how we should change the role of the National Bank and the banking system as a whole in order to fulfill the tasks that have been set. We are already taking all the necessary steps,” Roman Golovchenko emphasized.
