Viktor Lukashenko sends greetings to participants of 3rd Youth Olympic Games

MINSK, 9 January (BelTA) – First Vice President of the Belarusian National Olympic Committee (NOC) Viktor Lukashenko has sent a welcoming message to participants of the 3rd Youth Olympic Games in Lausanne, BelTA learned from the press service of the National Olympic Committee of Belarus.

“The Youth Olympic Games is a remarkable sports event that brings together the next generation of athletes. Despite a young age, you have passed a difficult qualification test and earned the right to perform at this big international sports event,” the message reads.

He expressed confidence that the competitions in Lausanne will be a springboard to the elite sport for the fledgling athletes. “I am sure you will confirm the high level of national sport as you represent Belarus at the Lausanne 2020 Youth Olympics,” Viktor Lukashenko said. He wished Team Belarus good health, success, competitive spirit and Olympic triumph.

Team Belarus will compete in five disciplines: biathlon, Alpine skiing, speed skating, cross-country skiing and Ice Hockey Mixed NOC 3x3. Vasili Iourtchik will be Chef de Mission of the Belarusian delegation.

Taking part in the competitions will be around 1,880 athletes from more than 70 countries. There will be 16 disciplines on the program: biathlon, cross-country skiing, ice hockey mixed NOC 3x3, Alpine skiing, figure skating, Nordic combined, short track speed skating, ski jumping, bobsleigh, skeleton, luge, curling, freestyle skiing, speed skating, snowboarding and ski-mountaineering.

The Youth Olympic Games are held by the International Olympic Committee once in four years. The games debuted in Innsbruck (Austria) in 2012. The 2nd Winter Youth Olympic Games took place in and around Lillehammer, Norway,  in 2016. The 3rd Youth Olympic Games in Lausanne will run through 22 January.
