Belarus clinch 11 medals at World Sambo Championships in South Korea

MINSK, 11 November (BelTA) – Belarusian athletes won 11 medals at the World Sambo Championships in Cheongju, South Korea, BelTA has learned.

On the last day of the competitions Belarus' Maria Kandratsyeva secured silver in the women's +80kg event. Her teammates Katsiaryna Prakapenka (56kg) and Volha Maleika (68kg) took bronze medals.

Earlier, silver medals were claimed by Tatsiana Matsko (64kg), Stsiapan Papou (74kg), and Anfisa Kapayeva (48kg). Bronze medals went to Maryna Zharskaya (52kg), Anzhela Zhylinskaya (72kg), Aliaksei Stsiapankou (90kg), Andrei Kazusionak (100kg) and combat sambo Yauheni Aleksiyevich (82kg).

Belarus won 12 (two gold, five silver and five bronze) medals at the previous World Sambo Championships in Bucharest.

Sambo is a non-Olympic sport. On 30 October 2018, sambo received temporary recognition from the International Olympic Committee.
