MINSK, 9 July (BelTA) - The 2020 Modern Pentathlon European Championships scheduled to be held in Szekesfehervar, Hungary on 17-21 September have been canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic restrictions, TASS reported.

The 2021 edition of the championships will be held in Russia's Nizhny Novgorod from 23 July to 8 August. The event will be co-located with the Congress of the European Confederation of Modern Pentathlon (ECMP) which has been led by Olympic champion Dmitry Svatkovski from Russia since 2012. He will continue to perform his duties until then.

The European modern pentathlon championships among men and women were held separately until 1999. Minsk hosted the UIPM European Modern Pentathlon Championships in 2017. During the country's sovereign history, Belarusian modern pentathlon athletes won 25 medals (4 gold, 9 silver, 12 bronze) at the European championships.
