Visit of international delegations seen as important for objective assessment of situation on border

MINSK, 11 November (BelTA) - The visit of international delegations is important for the objective assessment of what is happening on the Belarusian-Polish border, the Belarusian State Border Committee told BelTA.

On 11 November, delegations of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Belarusian Red Cross Society visited the makeshift camp on the Belarusian-Polish border to get acquainted with the situation, to talk to people who are in a critical situation and to deliver humanitarian aid.

“Head of the UNCHR Office in Belarus Mulusew Mamo and IOM Chief of Mission in Belarus Mahym Orazmuhammedova expressed concern over the situation in this camp and also expressed their willingness to assist in resolving the crisis based on the respect for human rights. In turn, the refugees told the international representatives why they decided to stay on the border line, despite the difficult conditions, and asked for help in getting asylum in the EU," the committee said.

The committee added: "The visit of international delegations is important for making objective assessment of what is happening on the Belarusian-Polish border and for finding constructive ways to resolve the crisis, taking into account the international experience, based on the interests of people."

Currently, there are more than 2,000 refugees on the border line, including women and children. Cold weather, lack of food and water pose a threat to the physical condition of people seeking asylum in EU countries.
