Union State of Belarus and Russia to finance medical assistance to Chernobyl victims annually

MOSCOW, 11 March (BelTA) - The commission on environment, natural resources and accident management at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union State of Belarus and Russia will convene for a web-based meeting on 16 March, BelTA learned from the PA press service.

“The MPs will review the execution of the Union State program ‘Providing comprehensive medical assistance to certain categories of citizens of Belarus and Russia who have been exposed to radiation as a result of the disaster at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant' in 2020 and will consider giving it a status of the annual program,” the press service informed. “This status will guarantee annual funding from the Union State budget and will exempt state customers from the need to justify the expenses annually."

The participants to the meeting will discuss the progress in the work to coordinate the draft concept of the Union State program "Improving approaches to emergency preparedness, emergency response and safety regulation in the use of nuclear energy" and will review the 2020 results of the program of joint activities of Belarus and Russia within the framework of the Union State to protect the population and rehabilitate the territories affected by the Chernobyl disaster.

"The MPs will also be briefed on the progress in the program of the Union State to provide medical rehabilitation services to children from the regions of Belarus and Russia worst affected by the Chernobyl disaster and other accidents and man-made disasters," the press service added.

The web-based meeting is to be attended by officials of the Standing Committee of the Union State, the ministries of health, finance, emergencies and natural resources of Belarus and Russia.
