Sergeyenko: Situation in Belarus is stable, but some risks remain

MINSK, 19 May (BelTA) – The situation in Belarus has returned to normal, but risks remain, Head of the Belarus President Administration Igor Sergeyenko told reporters after he presented president's Ordinance No.2 “On protecting the sovereignty and the constitutional order” of 9 May 2021 at the fifth session of the Council of the Republic on 19 May, BelTA has learned.

“You see, you know what is going on around Belarus and what happened last year, you know about the military and political developments around our country. Risks and threats are not dwindling; quite the opposite, things are probably getting worse. A testimony to that are preparations for terrorist attacks that were suppressed by our special services and law enforcement. Documentaries about the conspiracy have recently been shown. The plotters were identified, their plans were frustrated. Probably, these are the first such serious crimes in the history of sovereign Belarus,” Igor Sergeyenko said.

According to him, it is possible that more people might be involved in such activities. “Threats are quite real. At the initiative of the president, this ordinance was drafted in a rather fast and professional way taking into account the realities of today, the legislation and the Constitution. All proposals, requirements were taken into account. Moreover, this ordinance will be used only in case of one situation, which we simply should not allow to happen. You know that the situation is already back to normal. Yet, risks remain. Many threats are of a rather hidden nature. However, we have well-trained people who are able to detect preparations for possible provocations and crimes. You can see what is happening in neighboring countries. Terrorist acts, hostage-taking, various kinds of provocations. The latest events in Kazan are a case in point. Therefore, we need to be ready to repel any provocations and suppress any encroachments on our constitutional system, attempts on the life of the head of state, top officials,” Igor Sergeyenko said.
