Opinion: Young Belarusians, Russians take interest in war history, honor their heroes

MINSK, 26 February (BelTA) - Young people of Belarus and Russia take interest in the history of the war and honor their heroes, chairperson of the Standing Commission on Health, Physical Education, Family and Youth Policy Lyudmila Makarina-Kibak said as she took part in a video conference dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the Victory, BelTA has learned.

“We must remember what happened 75 years ago (which must never happen again) and remember those people who defended our land: our fathers, grandfathers and great-grandfathers,” Lyudmila Makarina-Kibak noted.

The Youth Chamber at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union State of Belarus and Russia suggested launching an information resource about the monuments to Soviet soldiers. The International Historic and Patriotic Project is called the Digital Star and got underway about a year ago. “Now work is underway to fill the website with content. In any case all monuments in Belarus and Russia should be digitized. People will be able to use the website to see what battles took place in a particular region, what monuments have been installed. We hope that the initiative of young people will be supported by the residents of the two countries who will provide information about the memorials to the heroes who defended their native land,” the MP said.

The video conference is dedicated to the military and historical aspects of the Great Patriotic War, as well as to the social, cultural and spiritual significance of Great Victory. Plans are in place to discuss themes such as the historical memory of the heroic deeds of the Soviet soldier during the war as an integral part of the future of the peoples of Belarus and Russia; the attitude of young people to the events and results of the Great Patriotic War; the importance of involving young people in preserving the authentic historical memory and handing it down through generations; preservation of the memory of the Victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War and counteraction to falsification of history; the international historical and patriotic project “Digital Star” on digitization of memorial places and burials of the Great Patriotic War; history of native land during the war; problems of preserving objective information and memory about the events of the war.
