Opinion: Actions of candidates, their staffers are unpredictable

MINSK, 9 August (BelTA) – Actions of the candidates, their staffers and supporters are in many ways unpredictable, Secretary General of the Council of the CIS Inter-Parliamentary Assembly Dmitry Kobitsky said in an interview to the ONT TV channel, BelTA has learned.

According to Dmitry Kobitsky, during visits to polling stations he saw that members of the election commissions felt strained, that they “were ready for some challenges, I hope, not threats”. “It is clear that actions of the candidates, their staffers, possible supporters are unpredictable in many ways,” he said.

Aleksei Avdonin, an analyst with the Belarusian Institute of Strategic Research, stressed that technologies were used during this election campaign to provoke disorder in the society. “The major initial goal was to split the society into two warring fronts. That did not happen,” he said.

“The next step was an active pressure on the members of the election commissions. It was mostly aimed at so-called personal fears like sharing some personal data, an active influence through social networks and so on,” the analyst said.

According to the expert, such methods had been tested in the election campaigns in other countries and proved efficient. However, no one will allow such technologies to play any role in Belarus.
