Call to set up association of agricultural universities in Eurasian Economic Union

MOSCOW, 24 March (BelTA) – Chairman of the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) Mikhail Myasnikovich proposed to set up an association of agricultural universities of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) as he visited Russian State Agrarian University – Timiryazev Moscow Agricultural Academy on 24 March, BelTA learned from the EEC press service.

Mikhail Myasnikovich suggested creating an association of agricultural universities of the EAEU member states with the aim to facilitate collaboration between researchers, the academia, agricultural enterprises, consumers, and the EEC, the press service noted.

“Successful development of the agricultural sector of the EAEU is impossible without contribution from researchers and the academia,” Mikhail Myasnikovich stressed. The EEC decisions should be based on research and scientists should be guided in their research by priorities identified by the EEC and the EAEU member states, he added.

Although the EAEU fully satisfies its domestic demand for staple food products, food security should always be in focus, Mikhail Myasnikovich believes. It is important to continue working on import substitution: increase output, improve effectiveness of animal husbandry, and attain better crop yields.

“If we use our scientific capacities, we will adopt regulations that will advance integration in the EAEU,” Mikhail Myasnikovich said.

It is also important to develop common approaches to the development of academic mobility and cooperation between universities in the EAEU, Member of the EEC Board (Minister) for Industry and Agribusiness Complex Artak Kamalyan noted. This will enable students from the EAEU member states study at leading universities in a certain field. “This will also give us an opportunity to solve issues in an efficient manner and strengthen intercultural ties,” Artak Kamalyan said and expressed hope that this idea will receive support from the EAEU member states.
