MINSK, 16 March (BelTA) – Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Belarus to Serbia Sergei Malinovsky has taken part in the international conference titled as 80 Years after the Victory: Living Memory and Lessons of History, dedicated to the global significance and lessons of the Great Victory over fascism, BelTA learned from the Belarusian diplomatic mission in Serbia.
The conference, organized by the Institute for Political Studies in Belgrade, Russia’s International Fund of the Spiritual Unity of Nations, and the Archives of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina with the support of numerous partners, was held at the Russian Center of Science and Culture (Russian House) in Belgrade. In a welcoming address to the participants, Sergei Malinovsky emphasized the importance of the event and its subject matter amid the current growing attempts to rewrite history, as well as the enduring significance of preserving the memory of World War II and its lessons for Belarus. He noted the joint efforts with allies, partners, and like-minded people in the international arena to protect historical truth and prevent the revival of Nazism.
The diplomat stressed that Belarus consistently adheres to the course of a careful and objective approach to history, relying on irrefutable and documented facts. Noting the enormous sacrifices endured by the Belarusian people during the Nazi occupation, the Belarusian diplomat informed the participants about the investigation by the Prosecutor General’s Office of Belarus into the criminal case of the genocide of the Belarusian people during the Great Patriotic War, and the confirmed conclusions that the scale of the tragic events of that period was much greater than previously thought.
The ambassador pointed out that in Belarus particular emphasis is placed on ensuring that the younger generation knows as much as possible about the historical truth and the price of the victory over Nazism and fascism.
During the conference opening, the deputy speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia also addressed the participants. The conference brought together historians, politicians, diplomats, and public figures from Serbia, Russia, Belarus, and a number of other countries. Representatives of the Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus delivered reports at the event, with the Belarusian State Museum of the Great Patriotic War joining via video conference.
