Belarus' Academy of Sciences to set up experimental enterprise to make electric vehicles

MINSK, 25 January (BelTA) – The National Academy of Sciences of Belarus intends to set up an experimental enterprise to make Belarusian electric vehicles. Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus Vladimir Gusakov made the relevant statement on the air of the TV channel STV, BelTA has learned.

The official said: “We've designed our own electric vehicle and more than one. We have several models at present: a truck, a car, a minivan, there is even a sports car in the works. All the components are tried and tested. We are now working on creating an experimental manufacturing enterprise in order to batch produce our models. Negotiations are in progress with Chinese and Russian partners.”

Belarusian scientists are working on middle-class models, which are intended for the mass market. “I would like to emphasize: it is not a Geely, it is a totally different electric vehicle with only Belarusian components,” Vladimir Gusakov stated.

In his words, several battery models are under consideration for the Belarusian electric vehicle. Since lithium-ion batteries are very expensive, Belarusian scientists focus on their own designs. “Our models are going through trials in January. If we are satisfied with the results, we will be able to make an entire range of batteries for various applications, including small means of transportation (electric bicycles) and trucks. We are working on extending the cruising range of electric vehicles to 500km,” Vladimir Gusakov noted.

“The motor is as significant as the energy accumulator. It is also a unique and rather successful R&D product of Belarusian scientists. We are now working on an entire range of electric motors for various electric vehicles. They meet all the necessary requirements: reliability, durability, the ability to operate in various conditions (cold, heat),” the official added.
