Lukashenko: West has now turned to theft

MINSK, 28 October (BelTA) – The West has now stooped to theft by using others' gold and foreign exchange reserves, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said at the 3rd Minsk International Conference on Eurasian Security on 28 October, BelTA has learned.
“First it was sanctions. They have imposed rounds and rounds of them… Now they've stooped to theft. I am talking about the gold and foreign exchange reserves of Russia and Belarus. Back in the day they [Western countries] always wanted us to keep our gold and foreign exchange reserves where? If our reserves are kept at home, then they are not counted as true reserves. We must send them abroad to first-class banks in 'reliable' countries. So we did. And now? They've reached the point where they are shamelessly seizing these funds and, as if it were their own, and use it wherever they see fit," the president remarked.

He noted that in this regard, there is still a bit of a game being played: 'Oh, Belgium is hesitating, the USA... What if we take these reserves and the international law crumbles?’

“For heaven's sake, it crumbled long ago. It's simply a game. They are trying to dupe us (though they can't, as we are informed people) and people around the world. This issue was decided long ago. It's banditry and theft," the president emphasized.

He believes that the response to this should include the creation of an alternative currency.”We all understand that sanctions could be used against other countries today. If India disobeys and continues to buy oil from the 'wrong' places, it could face sanctions. This is a country with over 1.5 billion people! Everyone understands that tomorrow, they could apply military pressure, just look at Venezuela. Everyone understands that we might be headed there. So let's unite, let's create some kind of alternative, starting with financial settlements and ending with some clear demonstration of our capabilities. We do have such capabilities,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.
