Lukashenko supports proposal to extend seasonal discount for regional train service for pensioners

SVETLOGORSK DISTRICT, 22 June (BelTA) – Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko supported the proposal to extend the seasonal 50% discount for regional train service for pensioners by one month. The head of state made this decision during the working trip to Svetlogorsk District, Gomel Oblast on 21 June, BelTA has learned.

As it has been reported, the president opened the regular electric train service on the new electrified section of the Belarusian Railways and took a ride in the train to assess the level of comfort. During the trip, Aleksandr Lukashenko was informed that pensioners requested to extend the seasonal 50% discount for regional train service for pensioners by one month, until 31 October. This measure has been economically calculated, a legal act has been drafted.

Aleksandr Lukashenko unconditionally supported the proposal. "So we made a decision today. This is good," he said.

Every year from 1 May to 30 September (the fieldwork season) citizens who have reached the generally established retirement age are entitled to a 50% discount on fares in regional economy-class trains. It is stipulated in Decree No.176 of 29 April 2011 “Concerning state support for pensioners”. This period will soon be extended by a month, until 31 October inclusively.

It should be noted that in recent days this has been the second decision on additional support for pensioners. A day earlier, Aleksandr Lukashenko signed a decree on raising labor pensions as from 1 July. The president made the announcement when talking with the participants of the commemorative event in the village of Borki, Kirovsk District. The head of state noted that people raised the issue of pensions during the signature collection campaign. “Pensions are not large. But what we have, we have. Yesterday I asked the government (the decree has not yet been issued). We had planned to raise pensions sometime in the fourth quarter. However, I asked to do it earlier. We do not have a lot of money. But we should help veterans, pensioners as much as possible. It is not a populist measure at a time of the election. I have never done it. Since veterans, pensioners bring up this issue asking to raise the pensions by at least 10-20 dollars, we need to do it now so that it gets easier for you” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.
