MINSK, 28 October (BelTA) – European politicians are unwilling to work towards a peaceful resolution, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said at the 3rd Minsk International Conference on Eurasian Security in Minsk on 28 October, BelTA has learned.
“At present, it seems that Europe does not seek peace. Politicians have forgotten the horrors of World War II. They have come to believe that building up military potential will make them safer. No, and no again! This is a road to nowhere, another step up the ladder of escalation,” the Belarusian leader stressed.
He pointed out that despite repeated requests, there is no dialogue with European countries on security, arms control, and confidence-building measures. The Open Skies Treaty is a clear example of this: “We are presented with false accusations of non-compliance with the document, while at the same time, there is a complete refusal to engage in any interaction.”
“All right, they have abandoned Protestant ethics in favor of LGBT rights, but where is the so-called Western rationality? Do they really not understand that arms control and confidence-building measures are far more beneficial and less costly than an arms race? And the historical choice is clear: détente or escalation. So, let's choose détente right away. The sooner we do this, the better it will be for us and future generations,” the president urged.
