Lukashenko comments on upcoming constitutional referendum in Belarus

MOSCOW, 18 February (BelTA) - Belarus is preparing for its most important political event, a constitutional referendum, which the country is holding in accordance with the interests of the Belarusian people, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko told the media after he met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on 18 February, BelTA has learned.

“I have informed the Russian president on how Belarus is preparing for the most important political event - the constitutional referendum. It will be held in accordance with the interests of the Belarusian people, and will not conflict in any way with the relations with our ally Russia,” said Aleksandr Lukashenko.

“The West is actively trying to destabilize the situation in the country using our self-exiled opposition. However, no one of them is longer entertaining the idea to repeat the events of August 2020,” he added.

The head of state expressed the confidence that through joint efforts Belarus and Russia would overcome the most complicated situations, resist any challenges and threats and build a common future. “No one should have an illusion that we will falter in the face of any difficulties,” the Belarusian leader said.
