Lithuania, Poland accused of increasing tensions in EU relations with Belarus, Russia

MOSCOW, 10 November (BelTA) – Lithuania and Poland lead the European Union towards stronger tensions in relations with Belarus and Russia. Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov made the statement after an annual meeting of the Russian-Belarusian ministerial collegium in Moscow on 10 November, BelTA has learned.

Asked to comment on statements of Polish politicians and experts, who say the situation at the Belarusian border resembles 1939 due to the migration crisis, Sergey Lavrov said that representatives of the West more and more often try to quote historical examples and draw historical parallels. “They always use what I'd describe as a cutoff tactic,” he said. “If Polish experts say the situation resembles 1939, why don't they recall 1938? The situation could have reminded them something from the age when Czechoslovakia was being divided, for instance.”

“I believe such parallels are absolutely inappropriate. They reflect inadequate thinking on the part of the people, who draw them. Even more so if those are people with some power. It only means that the most recent additions to the European Union continue dragging Europe within the framework of the European Union and within the framework of NATO towards stronger confrontation both with Belarus and Russia,” he stressed.

“I strongly hope that responsible Europeans, particularly so-called European grandees, will show their will and will not allow themselves to be pulled into an endless spiral, which is quite dangerous,” the Russian minister of foreign affairs said.
