FM: Mass media should not act as opposition ideologists

MINSK, 16 February (BelTA) – It is absolutely unacceptable when mass media outlets act as opposition ideologists, Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei said at a press conference when speaking about the freedom of speech and work of mass media in Belarus, BelTA has learned.

“This is absolutely unacceptable when a number of media outlets take an open anti-government stance and act as opposition ideologists, when a number of non-governmental organizations carry out anti-government activities under the guise of environmental, humanitarian work. It is quite clear that the authorities were forced to take action and respond adequately in order to prevent the recurrence of such situations in the future,” the minister stressed.

Vladimir Makei is also sure that the freedom of speech and alternative points of view have always existed in Belarus. “Unfortunately, in that situation - the year 2020 - many abused the freedom of speech. I mean a number of media outlets and a number of journalists who turned from impartial journalists into opposition ideologists. They did not even hide it. Instead of objective presentation of information they engaged in outright smear campaigns against the authorities. Moreover, they took part in anti-government actions, which I believe has nothing to do with impartial journalism,” the minister said.

Vladimir Makei emphasized that there would be no dialogue with those who pursue an openly anti-state policy, call for sanctions, demand pressure on Belarus and rejoice when another package of sanctions is introduced.

Civil society also exists in Belarus, Vladimir Makei said. Moreover, there are plans to develop a legislative act on civil society. “Anyone can take part in the constitutional process. A number of socio-political forces put forward meaningful proposals that made their way to the new Constitution draft. Those who want their voices to be heard by the authorities are able to do it.
