MOSCOW,
23 February (BelTA - TV BRICS) - The Moscow government announced the
discovery of a hoard of ancient coins during restoration work at the
historic Averky Kirillov Chambers, located on Bersenevskaya Embankment.
According to the official website of the city administration, during excavations on the second floor of the building, experts discovered a broken, polished black jug and more than 20,000 white metal coins dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. The coins are in excellent condition, with the inscriptions clearly legible. Most of them were found next to a ceramic vessel.
Employees of the Moscow Department of Cultural Heritage, together with archaeologists, uncovered the treasure and collected fragments of the jug for subsequent restoration. In addition to the coins, fragments of polychrome tiles, a bone whistle and a pectoral cross were found during the excavations. All artefacts will be transferred to the Moscow Museum for permanent storage after the necessary procedures have been completed.
The Averky Kirillov Chambers are an architectural complex dating back to the early 15th-16th centuries. The building is named after Averky Kirillov, a Duma clerk, merchant and wealthy statesman who rebuilt the halls in the mid-17th century. At various times, the complex has housed various government and historical institutions. Restoration work has been underway since 2024, including reinforcement of the foundations and cleaning of the facades.
