Holy Epiphany Kutein Monastery in Orsha

ORSHA, 6 August (BelTA) - The Holy Epiphany Kutein Monastery in Orsha is one of Belarus’ major spiritual and cultural centers.

It was founded in 1623 on the lands of the Kuteino estate owned by wealthy landowner Bohdan Stetkiewicz-Zawirski (also spelled as Bogdan Stetkevich-Zavirsky).
The first structure erected on the monastery grounds was the unique wooden Epiphany Cathedral, consecrated in 1635 by Kiev Metropolitan Petr Mogila. By the mid-17th century, a second church had been constructed on the monastery grounds - the stone Church of the Holy Spirit. In 1630, Mogilev printer Spiridon Sobol established a printing house on the monastery grounds which turned into an outstanding center of Belarusian Cyrillic book production, renowned for publishing The Primer.
