MINSK, 5 October (BelTA) – Belarusian Energy Minister Denis Moroz outlined the prospects for improving the country's energy system, including through the development of nuclear power generation, as he spoke to the STV TV channel on 5 October, BelTA has learned.
According to Denis Moroz, in accordance with the instruction of the head of state, the ministry is developing a technical and economic feasibility study. This study is analyzing two fundamentally different options. “The first option is the construction of an additional unit at the site of the Belarusian nuclear power plant. The advantage of this option is that it allows for the implementation of such a project in a shorter time frame. It enables the use of the existing technological infrastructure at the BelNPP site. Furthermore, it allows for the use of social infrastructure, meaning the town of Ostrovets itself, roads, personnel, healthcare, everything that has been developed around the BelNPP. This makes it possible to significantly reduce construction costs and achieve high efficiency in the implementation of this project,” he said.

The minister stated that an alternative also exists. “We could implement a new project for a Belarusian nuclear power plant. This would not be tied to the site of the existing plant; instead, a two-unit plant of the same kind could be built in another region. The eastern part of Belarus is currently seen as the most promising direction. This option has its own set of advantages, the main one being precisely the social factor, because the construction of a nuclear power plant is a powerful impetus for regional development. At the moment, all the pros and cons of both options are being weighed in order to make the most correct and precise decision in the interests of our country, not for the current moment, but for the strategic long term,” Denis Moroz stressed.
