MINSK, 6 December (BelTA) – Belarus and Russia have reached record-high mutual trade this year, Belarusian Economy Minister Yuri Chebotar told the media on 6 December, BelTA has learned.

“The key thing in 25 years of the recent history, joint development and creation of the Union State is that we have never stopped. The starting point keeps shifting, as we take new heights. This year, the same as last year, we have a record-high trade, including in Belarus’ supplies to the Russian Federation. We always say that the Russian Federation is the number one partner for Belarus in terms of social and economic development, including in terms of mutual trade,” Yuri Chebotar said, adding that the Russian Federation is also the number one supplier for Belarus.

The economy minister added: “We are a country with an open economy. The 130% ratio of trade to GDP is an indicator that characterizes that we do trade substantially and produce a lot for exports. Therefore, cooperation with the Russian Federation is very important for us in terms of improving the quality of this trade. We need competitive goods, efficient production. Today this is the main thing on the agenda - the implementation of joint projects, joint activities, including the protection of the domestic market, and other things.”

According to Yuri Chebotar, the Economy Ministry has recently held a joint board with representatives of the Ministry of Economic Development. “Number one item on our agenda was the discussion of the joint forecast for the next three years. The key task we set for ourselves is to grow in terms of trade, to grow at a rate above the global one and including through domestic income and, most importantly, investment.”
