Ambassador urges Belarus, Russia not to forget about common market as they deal with sanctions

MINSK, 25 January (BelTA) – As they deal with sanctions, Belarus and Russia should not forget about the common market of the Union State of Belarus and Russia. Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Belarus to Russia Yuri Seliverstov made the statement on the air of the TV channel Belarus One, BelTA has learned.
Yuri Seliverstov said: “We face many issues when as part of the anti-sanctions work our colleagues in the Russian Federation implement some measures to protect their own market. Their market as a whole. Not only trade. They amend their legislation and we do not always fit into the new framework. We need to wisely organize our work. Despite the mutual measures that we implement within the framework of our national legislations we should not forget that we have the Union State, that we have a list of priority programs and projects and that we are not strangers for each other.”

On 22 January Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko appointed Yuri Seliverstov Belarus’ ambassador to Russia. He had been the Belarusian finance minister prior to this appointment.

“I thought that in Russia we could use a person, who needs to visit the regions, needs to work and cooperate with the Russian regions, needs to keep an eye on the main directions of our work in the Russian Federation. And primarily in trade,” the president noted. “You are absolutely aware of these problems. You know the main problems that exist in our Belarusian-Russian relations. I have concluded that out of all the suggested candidates you may be fit for working in Russia.”
