MINSK, 4 May (BelTA) - Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka (World No. 7) advanced to the quarterfinal of Mutua Madrid Open in Madrid, BelTA has learned.
The Belarusian powered past Jessica Pegula of the United States (No.33) 6-1, 6-2 in 53 minutes. The American was supposed to play Victoria Azarenka (No.15) in the round of 16 but the Belarusian had to withdraw over an injury. Aryna Sabalaneka will face Elise Mertens of Belgium in the quarterfinal.
At the start of the tournament in Madrid Aryna Sabalenka defeated Russian Vera Zvonareva (114) 6-1, 6-2, then overcame another Russian Daria Kasatkina (37) 6-3, 6-3. Victoria Azarenka defeated Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova (32) 7-5, 3-6, 6-1 in the round of 32.
