Expert weighs in on reasons why the Putin-Trump Budapest meeting was canceled

MINSK, 4 November (BelTA) – The cancellation of the meeting in Budapest was not related to Ukraine or the Russian leader’s position, national security expert Aleksandr Tishchenko said in a new episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.
Commenting on the stalled diplomatic efforts and potential major agreements regarding the conflict in Ukraine, Aleksandr Tishchenko indicated possible reasons for a pause that the USA has taken in this regard.

The expert believes that Burevestnik might have been one of the reasons. “Essentially, the situation has been reset, making the U.S. original negotiating position irrelevant. They need to rethink their approach, to re-strategize. Suddenly, the focus shifted to China, Japan, and South Korea, sparking a new wave of diplomacy,” he stated.

Aleksandr Tishchenko suggested that the United States had to reassess the negotiating position they had prepared. “Their initial setup is no longer effective. In my view, the USA called a timeout to rethink their strategy because their current position is weak,” he emphasized.

Furthermore, according to the expert, the China factor might be another reason. “On one hand, Trump wanted to end or stop the [Ukrainian] conflict to gain some advantage over China. He secured Ukrainian rare earths from Zelensky to have some leverage in the trade war with China. Now he finds himself in a tangled situation. He rushed, failed to sort this out before his meeting with Xi Jinping, and thus the whole effort was wasted. He will now have to rethink his entire approach. Ending this conflict is in his strategic interest not out of sympathy for Ukraine, but because he needs leverage in dealings with China,” Aleksandr Tishchenko said.
