"On Point"
MINSK, 28 November (BelTA) – Belarus can utilize its potential to participate in Ukraine's reconstruction, economist and analyst Serghei Banari said in a new episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.
To persuade global elites of something, it is necessary to demonstrate that Belarus and Russia are agreement capable, Serghei Banari believes. “A goodwill gesture from Belarus was the release of two Catholic clergy members who committed serious crimes against the state, and 31 convicted Ukrainian citizens. The matter is about the intelligence communities of the Vatican, not Ukraine's, but UK’s. Accordingly, this is, so to speak, an advance given to them so that they do not oppose the ongoing events, namely the setting of the ground for a peace deal on Ukraine,” the expert noted.
According to the analyst, Aleksandr Lukashenko truly knows what he is talking about. “Look at what he has prioritized. He aims to build additional power units at the nuclear power plant and wants another nuclear power plant. He understands very well that in today's realities, energy is far more important than any rare earth metals or any amount of money. He who possesses abundant energy will wield enormous influence,” the expert emphasized. “I believe Aleksandr Lukashenko aims to integrate Belarus into Russia's economic and political sphere of influence. And to achieve this, it is essential to build up the national economy, industrial and energy capabilities, and so on.”
Belarus could play a role beyond just a mediator between Ukraine and Russia, something greater, he believes. “Belarus could become a kind of bridge, including by using its nuclear power plant and a range of other potentials it possesses, to integrate into Ukraine's reconstruction process. This may sound very bold, but in my opinion, it is not without logic and certain prospects,” he noted.
