Belarus views participation in CSTO as important

MINSK, 2 March (BelTA) - Belarus attaches great importance to its participation in the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), Chairman of the Standing Committee on International Affairs and National Security of the Council of the Republic, member of the Standing Committee on Political Affairs and International Cooperation of the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly Sergei Rachkov told BelTA. On 2 March he took part in a session of the CSTO PA Standing Committee on Political Affairs and International Cooperation, which was held via video-conference.

“Belarus attaches great importance to participation in the CSTO, and we make every effort at the national level to strengthen this organization and actively support the development of the parliamentary dimension. Therefore, all our representatives work very closely and actively in all standing commissions of the CSTO PA on various issues, including political issues and international cooperation,” Sergei Rachkov said.

According to him, today's meeting considered about 10 issues. “In particular, we considered the priorities of Tajikistan's presidency in the CSTO, issues related to the political situation around the member states of the organization. Russia has made a proposal to adopt a statement by the CSTO PA Council on the inadmissibility of foreign interference in the electoral processes of the CSTO member states. We believe that this is a very important proposal. The Belarusian delegation supported the consideration of this draft statement. It states that the elections held in our countries have demonstrated the maturity and sustainability of the electoral systems. At the same time, the draft statement expresses concern about interference by other foreign states in the national electoral processes of CSTO countries. Therefore, we believe that this statement should play an important role in strengthening our countries,” the senator said.

The heads of the CSTO PA missions to monitor the parliamentary elections in Kazakhstan and the presidential elections in Kyrgyzstan delivered reports during the meeting. Some organizational issues were also considered.
