Lukashenko: Presidential election in Belarus was calm, peaceful

MINSK, 10 February (BelTA) - The presidential election in Belarus was held in a calm and peaceful manner, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said at a meeting with representatives of religious denominations in Minsk on 10 February, BelTA learned.

In his speech, Metropolitan of Minsk and Zaslavl Veniamin, Patriarchal Exarch of All Belarus, congratulated the head of state on his re-election as President of Belarus.
“This is very important for all of us. We sincerely congratulate you. The results of the election clearly show that the country follows the right path of development. They demonstrate the high level of trust and cohesion of our citizens who love their country, appreciate order and peace,” Metropolitan Veniamin pointed out. "What is even more important is that the election results also mean peace and stability on the Belarusian land at a time when mankind is facing more interstate and global conflicts.”

“The mission of the Orthodox Church is to ensure peace and harmony among people, preserve people's spiritual values and moral purity,” he said. "The policy of the state in spiritual and moral education meets the aspirations of Orthodoxy.” In turn, the Orthodox Church will do everything in its power to preserve the traditional Christian values that have defined the core of the Belarusian people for centuries, Metropolitan Veniamin added. Their destruction will lead to the loss of the spiritual core and the unique foundations of Belarusian statehood, Metropolitan Veniamin emphasized.
Aleksandr Lukashenko thanked for the congratulations. We all did a great job, he remarked. “We held the election in a way that no one did. I dreamed about it, and it happened: it was held in a calm and peaceful manner. The observers were pleasantly surprised by the atmosphere at the polling stations.”

“The election demonstrates that we have learned from the mistakes made by our society, myself, the authorities and you, among others. We have made great strides in correcting our mistakes,” the head of state said.
