SHKLOV DISTRICT, 27 September (BelTA) – We need to explore the construction of an additional sugar plant in the country, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said during a working trip to Shklov District in Mogilev Oblast on 27 September, BelTA has learned.
The discussion turned to reducing or increasing the acreage for sugar beets in the district. This is a rather sensitive issue, given that sugar mills primarily work with nearby regions. In this context, a problem arises with delivering beets from those parts of the country that are on the 'periphery.'

The head of state was briefed on the autumn field work in Shklov District, Mogilev Oblast, and the country as a whole. The president inquired about the progress in the potato, sugar beet, and flax harvest.
“Let's analyze the situation. We have four sugar mills in the central and western parts of the country. Here, in the east, there are none. But if we see the prospects, a small factory could be built here. We know how to do this; it's not a sophisticated facility. If we build this plant somewhere here in Mogilev Oblast, spend some money...”, the head of state noted
However, he added, there must be a clear understanding that this mill will have a reliable supply of sugar beets. “That means we need to sit down and work this out carefully over the winter,” he added.

Currently, Belarus operates four sugar mills: Slutsk Sugar Refinery and Gorodeya Sugar Complex in Minsk Oblast, the Skidel Sugar Complex in Grodno Oblast, and Zhabinka Sugar Plant in Brest Oblast. These enterprises process sugar beets and produce sugar, forming the cornerstone of the Belarusian sugar industry.
