MINSK, 4 March (BelTA) – Chairman of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Belarus Igor Karpenko told the ONT TV channel about preparations for the Belarusian People’s Congress, BelTA has learned.
“The elections are part of a large-scale modernization of the political system that was launched by the introduction of the constitutional amendments and additions,” noted the CEC head.
Igor Karpenko recalled that the composition of the Belarusian People's Congress should be determined within 60 days after the elections of deputies. The first meeting of the congress should also be held within this time-frame. “We will keep working, perform the functions entrusted to us by law until 25 April inclusive,” he added. “We must highlight the importance of the work of all government bodies, organizations, including the president and the government, who lent their helping hand to the Central Election Commission. It helped establish the national organizing committee for the Belarusian People’s Congress.”
