Russia MFA slams West's unfounded statements on Belarus’ election as interference in internal affairs

MOSCOW, 27 January (BelTA) - The Russian Foreign Ministry slammed the West's unsubstantiated statements on the election in Belarus as interference in the internal affairs of a sovereign state, BelTA learned.

“Russia condemns the unsubstantiated and biased statements by official representatives of the European Union, the OSCE/ODIHR and certain Western countries who are trying to present the past election as ‘sham’ and ‘illegitimate’. Moscow shares the opinion of the CEC of Belarus that suggested ignoring the statement made by persons who did not participate in the observation of the organization and conduct of voting (the OSCE/ODIHR was invited but ignored the invitation). This contradicts not only professional ethics but also common sense. Such actions are yet another manifestation of the double standards of the collective West and attempts to interfere in the internal affairs of a sovereign state in order to fan up tensions in the country,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

“Moscow welcomes the successful conduct of the regular presidential election in the Republic of Belarus on 26 January which, according to preliminary data from the Central Election Commission of Belarus, was confidently won by incumbent head of state Aleksandr Lukashenko with a more than convincing result,” the Russian Foreign Ministry stated. “Russia respects the sovereign will of the citizens of the fraternal nation,” the Russian Foreign Ministry emphasized.

“The Russian Foreign Ministry is committed to continuing friendly interaction with Belarusian colleagues, ensuring mutual support and tight coordination in the international arena in accordance with the program of concerted actions in foreign policy of the member states of the Union State Treaty for 2024-2026,” the Russian Foreign Ministry added.
