MINSK, 13 February (BelTA) - During a telephone conversation that took place on the evening of 12 February Russian President Vladimir Putin and his American counterpart Donald Trump agreed to instruct their aides to immediately start preparations for a meeting between the two leaders, TASS reports with reference to a statement by the Kremlin press secretary Dmitry Peskov.
"The heads of state agreed that they will keep in touch and confirmed they were open for a face-to-face meeting. They also agreed that instructions will be given to the aides to begin work immediately," Peskov said.
"Undoubtedly, the work has begun. As soon as the president makes the relevant decisions, we will inform you," he said, when asked if Russia had begun to form a negotiating group of its own. Peskov did not specify who might head the group, noting that it would be reported after Putin's relevant decisions.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump said that Moscow and Washington intend to immediately start negotiations on the settlement of the Ukrainian conflict. He said that he had asked Secretary of State Marco Rubio, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, his national security advisor Michael Waltz and special envoy Steve Whitkoff to lead the talks.
Donald Trump repeatedly said he was willing to meet with Vladimir Putin. He spoke about it both during the election campaign in the autumn of 2024 and immediately after his inauguration on 20 January 2025. The last face-to-face meeting between Putin and Trump took place at the G20 summit in Osaka in June 2019.
