"On Point"
MINSK, 7 March (BelTA) – A conflict in Iran is not in Russia’s interest. The country has long-term oil supply agreements with India and China, and spikes in oil prices will have no impact on the already agreed contractual prices, political scientist and orientalist Karine Gevorgyan said in the latest episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.
There are discussions in some countries that the Iranian conflict could work to Russia’s advantage – that the Eastern region would begin purchasing its oil and energy carriers at prices beneficial to Russia. Do our friendly neighbors indeed have such an interest? “Between China and Russia, and indeed India as well, there are long-term contracts,” the political scientist emphasized. “Therefore, since they are long-term contracts, we cannot change the price. What will happen later, we do not know. And whether it will even be logistically possible to supply this oil, given the hunt for our tankers?”
Moreover, according to Karine Gevorgyan, many forget about the attack on the residence of Russian President Vladimir Putin. She recalled how Western politicians, such as former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, once spoke openly about misleading Putin with the Minsk agreements, which no one intended to implement. In her opinion, efforts will be made to resolve the Iranian issue diplomatically for as long as possible. The political scientist stressed that people should to assess the situation calmly and think critically about informational provocations designed to foster public misunderstanding about the Iranian operation.
