Sabalenka starts Indian Wells campaign with dominant win

MINSK, 7 March (BelTA) – Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka has started her campaign at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, USA, with a prize fund of $9.4 million, BelTA has learned.

In the round of 64, the world number one defeated Japanese Himeno Sakatsume (world No. 132) with a score of 6-4, 6-2. The Japanese player had advanced to the main draw through qualifying and in the round of 128 defeated American Alycia Parks (No. 96), 6-4, 6-3. In the third round, Aryna Sabalenka’s opponent will be Romanian tennis player Jaqueline Cristian (world No. 35).

The competition in Indian Wells will conclude on 15 March. In the 2025 final, Aryna Sabalenka lost to Russian Mirra Andreeva, and in the 2023 final, she was defeated by Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina. In 2012 and 2016, Belarusian Victoria Azarenka claimed the title.
