MINSK, 18 August (BelTA) – In an interview with Tagesspiegel, Chairman of the German Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs Armin Laschet noted that EU countries themselves refused to participate in peace negotiations on Ukraine, which is why they were absent from the Putin-Trump meeting in Alaska.
He emphasized that it was obvious the U.S. president would seek talks with Putin to end the conflict. Armin Laschet also noted the irony of European leaders lamenting their exclusion from negotiations, despite having shown no prior willingness to engage in dialogue.

He believes that the absence of Vladimir Zelensky and EU leaders at the meeting was “Europe’s own fault”, as their focus had been solely on a military solution to the conflict. Armin Laschet added that to achieve serious progress toward peace, it would have been necessary to support diplomatic efforts – including seeking solutions behind closed doors and creating opportunities for consensus –rather than chasing media sensationalism.
