CIS foreign ministers urge to strengthen role of international law

MINSK, 19 March (BelTA) - The foreign ministers of the CIS countries adopted a joint statement on the role of international law, BelTA learned from the Department of Humanitarian Cooperation, Political and Social Affairs at the CIS Executive Committee.

The foreign ministers note that the principle of sovereign equality is one of the key to ensuring the stability of international relations. The foreign ministers consider it unacceptable for individual states to use measures of economic pressure or coercion against other states and reaffirm the importance of observing the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of sovereign states.

The document calls for continued joint work to strengthen the current system of the treaties on disarmament, non-proliferation and arms control. The foreign ministers urge to combine efforts and to apply a comprehensive approach with an aim of preventing and combating terrorism in accordance with international law, and express willingness to intensify mutually beneficial and mutually respectful cooperation in human rights.

The joint statement was adopted on 18 March in working order. It was signed by the foreign ministers of Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
