MINSK, 19 August (BelTA) – I believe we can achieve a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Ukraine, CIS Secretary General Sergei Lebedev told the media in Minsk on 19 August, BelTA learned.
“Naturally, I’ve been closely following developments. This matter is deeply personal to me. I lived in Ukraine for many years, studied and worked there. To this day, I maintain friendships with hundreds of people who, despite the conflict, remain committed to preserving bonds between our peoples. As the Belarusian president frequently notes, ours are three fraternal Slavic nations,” he stated.
According to him, a state of war contradicts human nature. 'The natural condition is one of peace,' Sergei Lebedev stressed.
"We sincerely hope that we will return (the sooner the better) to a state of peace between Russia and Ukraine. This has been stated by the Russian president and, very importantly for us, by the U.S. president who also said that achieving peace is absolutely necessary," Sergei Lebedev said. “I believe we will achieve it. It is a difficult goal, a challenging task. All experts agree, we won't attain this result quickly but we are moving toward it. Efforts are being undertaken both by CIS leaders, the Russian president, the Belarusian president and other leaders who have all supported these peace initiatives for Ukraine. I sincerely hope and believe we will reach this goal. And the sooner, the better," Sergei Lebedev stated.
Minsk played host to a regular meeting of the CIS Council of Permanent Plenipotentiary Representative on 19 August. During the meeting, the permanent representatives reviewed the draft agendas for the upcoming sessions of the CIS Ministerial Council, the Heads of Government Council and the Heads of State Council due in Dushanbe and Minsk this autumn. Progress in the development of the CIS legal framework development roadmap for 2023-2025, and results of its comprehensive review were on the agenda too.
