Belarus wants consensual approval of its candidate for CSTO SG office

MINSK, 7 February (BelTA) – Belarus hopes that the new secretary general of the Collective Security Treaty Organization will be approved by consensus, State Secretary of the Belarusian Security Council Stanislav Zas, the candidate for the post, told the media, BelTA has learned.

The CSTO Statute provides for the possibility to appoint a secretary general by a limited membership. “But this is not the best scenario. Such decisions should be consensual. This is a prerequisite for normal uninterrupted work. We hope that the decision will be reached soon,” Stanislav Zas said.

He noted that the process of approving his nomination is not progressing. The Belarusian party has not yet met with Armenia's prime minister. “We invited the Armenian party to meet any time convenient for them but have not received an answer yet,” Stanislav Zas added.

All the other CSTO member states have supported the candidate from Belarus.

As BelTA reported earlier, the procedure for approving the nomination of Belarus representative Stanislav Zas for the post of the CSTO Secretary General was compiled during his personal meetings with each head of the CSTO member state. In the period from 12 to 20 December, Stanislav Zas met with the presidents of the Kyrgyz Republic, the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Republic of Tajikistan, the Republic of Belarus and the Russian Federation and got the approval from each head of state.

In fulfillment of the instructions of Chairman of the Collective Security Council, President of Kyrgyzstan Sooronbay Jeenbekov, the CSTO Secretariat drafted resolutions of the Council of Foreign Ministers and the Collective Security Council on the appointment of Stanislav Zas as CSTO Secretary General and submitted them to the CSTO Permanent Council for consideration.
