MINSK, 20 January (BelTA) – Belarus recognizes the Conference on Disarmament as a unique multilateral forum for negotiating disarmament and arms control issues, Larisa Belskaya, Belarus’ Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Geneva, said as she addressed a plenary meeting of the Conference on Disarmament on 20 January, BelTA learned from the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“Belarus supports the adoption of the draft ‘traditional’ agenda of the Conference on Disarmament, including the resumption of discussions within the subsidiary bodies,” the Belarusian diplomat said. “Among its priorities for the 2026 session of the Conference, the Belarusian delegation highlighted the topic of prohibiting the development and manufacture of new types of weapons of mass destruction and new systems of such weapons.”
Larisa Belskaya also noted: “Since 1996 Belarus has been the initiator of the adoption of a corresponding UN General Assembly resolution. Belarus is grateful to the countries that have supported our initiative. During the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, the Belarusian side also plans to introduce the traditional draft resolution ‘Prohibition of the development and manufacture of new types of weapons of mass destruction and new systems of such weapons: report of the Conference on Disarmament’.”
Belarus has expressed its support for proposals to develop a universal international convention under the auspices of the Conference on Disarmament. This treaty would aim to prohibit the development and manufacture of new kinds of weapons of mass destruction and new systems of such weapons.
“The development and adoption of such an international document would serve the interests of the world community, laying a solid legal foundation and contributing to the achievement of agreed approaches to prohibiting the manufacture of new types of weapons of mass destruction before their production becomes a reality,” the Belarusian diplomat noted.
Larisa Belskaya expressed hope that the Conference will be able to overcome stagnation and contradictions through the efforts of all interested member states and begin substantive work in accordance with its mandate.
