First gas turbine unit, generator delivered to Novopolotsk cogeneration plant construction site

VITEBSK, 19 May (BelTA) – The construction of a peaking and backup energy source continues at premises of the Novopolotsk cogeneration plant. The foundations of gas turbines and step-up transformers have been completed, BelTA learned from the Vitebsk Oblast energy company Vitebskenergo.

The step-up transformers were delivered to the construction site in February. Their installation is nearing completion. Siemens Company has recently delivered the first gas turbine unit and a generator. Siemens representatives placed the equipment on the foundation using a unique automobile crane with a lattice boom with the lifting capacity of 600 tonnes. It is the only crane like that in the Commonwealth of Independent States. The second gas turbine unit will be delivered in late May.

The general contractor has started construction work at the diesel fuel storage facility. A process rack is being installed as well. Specialists continuously oversee the work.

The construction of the peaking and backup energy source began in autumn 2020. The implementation of the large investment project is an important part of the large-scale work on integrating the Belarusian nuclear power plant into the country's power grid. The new division of the Novopolotsk cogeneration plant will help keep electricity generation balanced. The backup capacity will be always on standby and will generate electricity only when necessary.
