Belarus, Tajikistan identify cooperation priorities

MINSK, 7 October (BelTA) – There are a number of areas of cooperation that Belarus and Tajikistan are interested in, Gennady Lepeshko, Chairman of the Standing Committee on National Security of the House of Representatives and the head of the working group on cooperation with the Parliament of Tajikistan, told the media, BelTA has learned.

A web-based meeting of the working groups on cooperation of the parliaments of Belarus and Tajikistan took place today.

Gennady Lepeshko noted that following the parliamentary elections in Tajikistan on 2 March, the new parliament set up new committees, standing commissions and friendship groups, including a Belarus-Tajikistan group. “Today we had our first meeting. We are keen to work across all areas, not just legislation. As parliamentarians, we can share our experience and advise on what documents to develop in different sectors,” he said.

According to him, the Tajik side is interested in Belarusian high technology. “Their interests include our market, agricultural machinery, and coal mining equipment. We are interested in Tajikistan’s aluminum, cotton fiber and fabrics, nuts, vegetables, and fruit. With their strong manufacturing capacity in these areas, the mutual interest is clear,” Gennady Lepeshko believes.

“New areas are emerging now. For instance, artificial intelligence, high-tech manufacturing, and new technology. As we are more advanced in this, we can share our expertise if there is interest,” the MP stressed.

Gennady Lepeshko noted that the business communities of the two countries are developing regional interaction. “It is up to governors and heads of administrations to choose areas of cooperation. The job of MPs is to provide assistance, to suggest the best way forward and help organize work and interaction. I think we will succeed,” he concluded.
