Belarus, U.S. health professionals discuss rehabilitation of visually impaired people

MINSK, 23 May (BelTA) – Belarusian and U.S. health professionals have exchanged the experience in the rehabilitation of the blind and visually impaired, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

A group of Belarusian health professionals visited the United States under the U.S. Congress Open World program on 11-21 May. The visit was organized by the U.S. with the assistance of Belarus' Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Belarus' Embassy in the U.S. and Honorary Consul of Belarus to Utah Dennis Neuenschwander.

The group comprised representatives of Belarus' Health Ministry recreational therapists, and ophthalmologists. The visit was aimed at exchanging experience with the U.S. specialists in the rehabilitation of the blind and visually impaired, exploring the organizational structure of the U.S. healthcare system, establishing long-term bilateral ties with specialists and organizations to promote cooperation in healthcare in future.

The Belarusian delegation went to Washington, D.C., met with the federal government's health authorities, and attended a presentation of the U.S. healthcare system. The delegation was also received by Charge d'Affaires a.i. of Belarus to the U.S. Pavel Shidlovsky.

The Belarusian delegation also came to Salt Lake City, Utah, visited the city's leading clinics, rehab centers and non-governmental organizations assisting people with physical disabilities. The delegation explored the new methods and approaches applied by these institutions as well as assistive technologies, the organization of cornea transplantation and neuro-ophthalmology. In turn, the representative of the Belarusian Health Ministry Irina Kireyeva presented the Belarusian health care system and the services provided for people with disabilities. The Belarusian delegation and the U.S. side discussed joint projects and prospects of further cooperation in this field in detail.
