MINSK, 14 January (BelTA) – Belarusian tennis player Iryna Shymanovich (world No.153) has failed to reach the main draw of the Australian Open in Melbourne, BelTA has learned.
In the second-round match on 14 January, the Belarusian lost to Spanish player Marina Bassols (No.236) with a score of 5-7, 1-6. In her opening match, Shymanovich secured a hard-fought three-set victory over Australia’s Arina Rodionova (No.207), 7-6 (7-4), 5-7, 6-4.
Earlier, another Belarusian, Aliaksandra Sasnovich (No. 102), advanced to the third and final qualifying round by defeating Liechtenstein’s Kathinka von Deichmann (No.258) 6-3, 7-6 (7-4). In the decisive match for a spot in the Australian Open main draw, Sasnovich will face Ukraine’s Daria Snigur (No.136). In her opening match of the tournament, the Belarusian defeated France’s Ksenia Efremova (No.577) in straight sets 6-3, 6-1.
The main draw of the Australian Open will be held on 18 January – 1 February. The total prize money for the season’s first Grand Slam tournament amounts to approximately $7.7 million.
