MINSK, 7 August (BelTA) – The State Security Committee (KGB) effectively counters challenges and threats despite the rapidly evolving situation around Belarus, State Secretary of the Security Council Aleksandr Volfovich told journalists following the meeting on KGB operations hosted by the Belarusian president, BelTA reports.

Aleksandr Volfovich noted that the KGB is one of the key institutions safeguarding Belarus’ sovereignty, territorial integrity, national interests, and constitutional order. “At present the State Security Committee successfully neutralizes all threats and challenges within its national security mandate despite the deteriorating regional security environment,” he emphasized.

According to him, the meeting with the head of state took place in a climate of trust: “The president keeps his finger on the pulse and maintains constant oversight of all security agencies. As an institution directly subordinate to the president, the KGB receives his primary attention.”

The state secretary of the Security Council noted that the meeting was attended by officials who served in the State Security Committee and are intimately familiar with the committee’s work. Aleksandr Lukashenko sought their perspectives on KGB improvement and operations in light of emerging challenges and threats that could impact Belarus’ national security.”

“The State Security Committee analyzes not only the forms and methods of the special military operation and developments near our border – but also the operational approaches of intelligence services worldwide. These insights are being incorporated into its practices,” Aleksandr Volfovich added.

According to him, the president evaluated the State Security Committee’s performance and instructed to further strengthen its capacity to fulfill its objectives. “We have the potential and resources to achieve this,” Aleksandr Volfovich assured.

He emphasized that the KGB leadership has a clear vision for the direction in which to build, develop, and refine the agency’s operations. “The State Security Committee has undertaken the most extensive infrastructure upgrade and development efforts in decades over these past five years,” Aleksandr Volfovich remarked. The state secretary noted that this encompassed multiple areas – including personnel training, educational facilities’ equipment, and training methodologies for future employees.

“Certain issues require closer analysis and attention. The president has set a task to refine and adjust operations based on the input from former KGB officers. Above all, we must ensure the security of our people and our country amid these challenging circumstances,” Aleksandr Volfovich concluded.
